The story of East Hill Farm begins in 1765, when the land was first settled. About a century later, the Farm welcomed its first overnight paying guests—Massachusetts farmers who brought their herds of up to 400 cattle north to graze the rich pastureland on Gap Mountain and Mount Monadnock during the summer months.

By 1920, East Hill Farm began hosting seasonal vacationers known as “summer people,” offering a rural retreat from city life. Following World War II, the property officially became known as The Inn at East Hill Farm and began operating year-round.

What began as a working farm has evolved into a beloved family farm destination resort. Today, guests enjoy cozy lodging, three home-cooked meals daily, and a wide variety of activities for all ages. Whether you’re here for adventure, relaxation, or celebration, The Inn at East Hill Farm blends rustic charm with warm hospitality for a truly unforgettable experience.

Finnish
Ingenuity

Necessity is the Mother of Invention Exhibit

While curious inventors such as Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell tinkered in their well-equipped labs, our Finnish forebears were at home hard at work creating gizmos out of used commercial materials, scraps of wood, rubber, metal, and chance discoveries not only to solve a problem or need, but also to keep their slim wallets pocketed.

This year, attendees are invited to contribute actual thingamajigs, widgets, and knockoffs to this year’s exhibit titled “Finnish Ingenuity: Necessity Is the Mother of Invention.” Items range from domestic to work-related to out-of-doors to social activities, among others.  For example, handmade shoe stretchers, clothes pins, wooden mallets, clothesline poles, wooden spoons, skis, engine oil can with spout, wooden snow pusher, metal tools, etc. Photographs and/or written descriptions are welcome, too, especially of small, inventive conveniences that helped make life easier.

Welcome

Tervehdys kaikille. Welcome returning and first-time participants to FinnFunn Weekend 2025 at East Hill Farm, a colorful location in the fall with magnificent Mt. Monadnock as a backdrop. The forested setting is perfect for a program of rich Finnish and Finnish-American heritage, culture, and funn while complementing this year’s theme: Finns and Nature. The planning committee has developed a program of presentations, performances, activities, and crafts in order to explore perspectives of the Finns’ closeness to, inspiration from, love and respect for nature. Along with a tori and sauna, the event has something to interest attendees of all ages. This year a FinnFunn Family Farm Day has been added to attract a younger audience; at attendees’ request, most sessions are now 45 minutes, simultaneously expanding informal time throughout the Weekend. Thank you for attending; bring others. Enjoy the camaraderie of friends old and new as we celebrate our vibrant heritage for the thirty-third year.

(Your continued support keeps the annual event growing. A contribution of any amount in the donation box helps FFW expand its programming.)
